Getting any kind of bad news is hard to handle, but when it concerns your own health, the emotions can become overwhelming. The challenges to managing your diabetes such as lifestyle modifications and dietary restrictions can be daunting. Having a support group filled with people that understand the trials and tribulations of all types of diabetes can tremendously help someone afflicted with this disease.
Support groups help to encourage participants in the transition and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. It is important to know that you are not alone and a support group can give you the confirmation that there are other people who suffer from diabetes. There are many other people that cope with diabetes. It afflicts around 29 million Americans.
Keep in mind that a support group differs from group therapy. Group therapy is a formal type of therapy that is facilitated by a professional counselor. Support groups can have a mental health practitioner guide the session, but do not require one to be there.
Some benefits to those who attend diabetes support groups includes, but is not limited to:
- Being open about your feelings and talking freely about your emotions.
- Understanding you are not alone, isolated or judged by anyone in the group
- Learning new coping skills from others in the group.
- Gaining a better understanding of diabetes and getting advice from group members
- Participate in discussions about area resources and doctors that can help in managing your diabetes.
- Make connections with other people in the area who are suffering from diabetes and going through the same challenges.
If you have any form of diabetes, you are encouraged to find a support group in your area. Go through the channels of your local diabetes association. They will know where you can find the support group that you need.
