To Use or Not To Use

Being in the Holistic Healing Arts I am aware of the controversies of many products for the skin. One is titanium Dioxide which is a known sunscreen component and covers the skin in white. Well, I have heard that it can be involved with lung cancer. Of course, everyone has different propensities. If your body isn’t likely to have an issue with something then it wont bother you but we don’t always have the luxury of knowing to which ingredients we’ll be reactive. That’s where knowing our family history is useful. If your family has a history for skin cancer then you will have a heads up to get regular screenings for your skin and have a relationship with a dermatologist and keep covered. There are SPF clothing lines out there like Columbia to help with this.

As a newly licensed skin care practitioner I am wary of ingredients that are controversial and chemical as opposed to organic and biologic, natural. I personally prefer organic but I realize people want results and that’s where chemical comes in. I prefer to use uncomplicated ingredients. The closer to Mother Nature the better. One moment that an SPF is called for is after a “peel” because the “new”, exposed skin is vulnerable to the fierce rays of the sun. Best to cover up or stay out of the sun after a peel for at least 24 hours. Just give the skin a break and soothe it with aloe and other natural products while it acclimates to the world. That’s my take on it. I don’t like the white stuff–titanium dioxide or preservatives like parabens also known to cause breast cancer. But, that’s just because I know that cancer runs in my family and so I’m attuned to that fact.

I’ve heard it’s best to get at least a half hour of exercise a day in the sun (no SPF). After that take cover. Just keep a light gauzy cover-up available and a nice floppy hat. Others will feel more comfortable wearing sunscreen before going outdoors, especially those with a lighter skin tone. Keep cool and safely covered and have a great summer!!!
